The sensor detects a hard bang to the back of the car.  You can throw it on a carpeted  floor and it won't go off.  A heavy collision will shut the relay and then the pump off quickly.  It can be reset in a second if you keep it accessible.
 
This switch was awarded the N.S.R.A. Best Safety Product of the Year for 1994. It will simply shut off your electric fuel pump in case of collision. Whether you have fuel injection or a carburetor, a broken fuel line can dump a lot of volatile gasoline on the ground or in your car in seconds.
